Celebrating 75 Years of the Intraocular Lens (IOL)
Posted 30 days ago by Andrey Ibragimov
The year 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of a groundbreaking advancement in ophthalmology: the first implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) by Sir Harold Ridley in 1950. This innovation revolutionized cataract surgery, transforming it into one of the most successful and commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide, with over 30 million operations annually.
The Visionary Behind the IOL
Sir Harold Ridley’s breakthrough was inspired by World War II pilots who suffered eye injuries from acrylic aircraft canopies. Noticing that these fragments remained inert in the eye, Ridley pioneered the idea of implanting an artificial lens to restore vision after cataract removal. Despite early skepticism from the medical community, advancements in materials and surgical techniques led to the widespread adoption of IOLs in the 1970s and 1980s.
Innovations in IOL Technology
Since its inception, IOL technology has evolved significantly, enhancing patient outcomes. Key advancements include:
✅ Biocompatible Materials & Enhanced Designs – Modern IOLs minimize complications and improve visual clarity.
✅ Presbyopia-Correcting IOLs – Multifocal and extended depth-of-focus IOLs help reduce dependence on glasses.
✅ Light Adjustable Lenses (LALs) – These allow post-surgical fine-tuning for personalized vision correction.
Commemorating the Milestone
To honor this milestone, a special event was held in London, where the first IOL was implanted. Hosted by the United Kingdom & Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS), the event featured a gala dinner, remarks from Nicholas Ridley (Sir Harold Ridley’s son), and a private tour of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.
The Lasting Impact of IOLs
Today, cataract surgery with IOL implantation is one of the safest and most effective procedures in medicine. Advances in surgical techniques, biometry, and lens design have continued to improve patient outcomes, ensuring better visual quality and enhanced quality of life.
As we celebrate 75 years of the IOL, we recognize the remarkable contributions of Sir Harold Ridley and the ongoing innovations that continue to shape the future of ophthalmic surgery.
